Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a clinical symptom experienced due to exposed dentin from either enamel loss (erosion, abrasion, abfraction) or removal of cementum exposed through gingival recession.
The most accepted one is the hydrodynamic theory. This causes a disturbance of fluid movement inside the tubules, which subsequently irritate the nerve endings in the pulp.
To treat hypersensitivity, you must either block the exposed tubules and inhibiting fluid flow across the dentinal tubules or decrease the excitability of the intradental nerve fibers.
